The Summer Term is a twelve week program for approximately thirty-five seventh and eighth grade boys and girls. It is housed in Chalet Hohliebi above the village of Lenk in the Bernese Oberland. Its purpose is to provide an opportunity for meaningful academic and character development in a unique environment. The academic demands are strenuous. Students have a full morning of classes (class size 10-12) Monday through Friday and two academic classes on Saturday. They have seven English periods per week, read six books and do an extensive amount of writing. Winter Termers study European history and geography and spend six weeks investigating aspects of Switzerland. This multidisciplinary class brings together history, European geography, science, economics, art and architecture and culminates in a thirty to fifty page Swiss report. Included in this project are excursions to two castles, a cheese factory, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the Roman capital of Switzerland and the federal capital of Berne. The science course focuses on meteorology, geology, and on the environmental aspects of Alpine preservation. The students bring with them their math books and assignments for the winter and generally complete them well before the end of the twelve weeks. Foreign languages are tutored on an individual basis, again following the program from home.
