Academics

The academic demands at The Winter Term are strenuous. Students have a full morning of classes Monday through Friday and two academic classes on Saturday. They have seven English periods per week, study four novels and do an extensive amount of writing. Winter Termers conduct an intensive survey course of European history and geography and spend six weeks investigating aspects of Switzerland. This multidisciplinary class brings together European history, geography, science, economics, art and architecture and culminates in an extended "Swiss Report" writing assignment and numerous field trips. The science modules focus on meteorology, geology, and on the farming and culinary traditions of rural Switzerland. The students bring with them their math books and assignments for the winter, and they generally complete these math assignments well before the end of the twelve weeks. Foreign languages are tutored on an individual basis, again following the program from home.
